Despite the many negative reviews that "The Last Song" has gotten from other critics, TJ gives the movie a generally positive review. He makes a reference to the bestselling novel "The Last Song" by Nicholas Sparks and somewhat implies that the movie is a decent adaptation of the book. From what I can tell, this critic is being way too sympathetic. Yes, Miley Cyrus does not have much experience acting in melodramatic films, and it seems practical that a star like her would wish to navigate out of the adolescent shows and films of her past. However, that is not a good excuse for her lack of skill when it comes to making the story believable. In short, Miley just does not make the cut. It is understandable that moving Miley Cyrus and her fanbase of out their comfort zone could be good for Miley's acting career and the ability for fans to be appreciative of different types of films, however this decision undermines those that are fans of the book and were looking forward to watching a great film adaptation. A film like this which is rich with drama and emotion, requires a lead who can actually display the emotions in a realistic way. The film lacked emotional depth in general, and had over-exaggerated acting during intense scenes, which made them noticeably unrealistic. As an individual who has heard great things about the book, I decided to take a chance at the movie, but was disappointed to see that it did not meet my expectations. Although I have not read the book, I assume it is a bestseller for a reason. It just seems as though the movie makers focused more on gaining popularity and fame, rather than showcasing the complexity of the story and characters with its emotional richness.
